Betsy Mitchell is a swimmer who has competed for the United States. She competed at the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympic Games.
At her first Olympics in 1984, Mitchell, along with her teammate Theresa Andrews and Jolanda de Rover, touched almost together near the wall to snare the top three spots in the 100 metres backstroke final, with Mitchell taking the silver by 0.08 of a second behind Andrews. She also contributed to the American women's gold-medal triumph in the 4x100 metres medley relay by swimming through the backstroke leg in the heats.
Four years later in Seoul, Mitchell was one of the five American women returning to their second Games from Los Angeles. With the rebirth of the East German women's dominance in swimming at the Games, Mitchell's medal chances faded. She fought off a challenge against her teammate Beth Barr by the closest margins to take the fourth spot in her signature race, missing the podium by more than a full second behind Cornelia Sirch of East Germany. Two days later, she swam through the backstroke leg in the 4x100 metres medley relay heats before the American coaches gambled on Barr to replace her on the U.S. women's team that scored a runner-up spot in the final.
