Basketball at the 1988 Summer Olympics was held from 17 to 30 September 1988 at the Jamsil Gymnasium.
This edition marked the last Olympics to allow amateur players and those coming from the professional basketball leagues outside NBA in the men's tournament before FIBA voted in a rule change to permit professional NBA players for the next Games in April 1989. Moreover, the women's field was expanded to eight teams with four in each of the two groups through a round-robin format to determine the top two semifinalists.
