The competition exists out of two different phases. The first phase is a group of three, in which teams play each other once. The two winners of the groups get a bye to the quarterfinals, while the numbers two and three play each other in a preliminary round. In every round, the winners continue towards the final, while the losers of a match continue in a losers bracket. Once there is only one team remaining in the winners bracket, they play the winner of the losers bracket for the gold medal.
