Badminton was first featured during the 1992 Summer Olympics, although it also appeared at Munich 1972 and Seoul 1988 as a demonstration event. During the 1996 Summer Olympics, a mixed event was added to the discipline. Its governing body Badminton World Federation was founded in 1934 as the International Badminton Federation.

East Asian countries have been shown to be powerhouses in badminton, with China, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Japan and Malaysia winning 90 out of a possible 106 medals.
