The men's 3000 metre steeplechase of Athletics 2024 during the 2024 Summer Olympics was held on 5–7 August 2024 in the Stade de France. With 36 athletes competing, the event was won by Soufiane El Bakkali from Morocco, with Kenneth Rooks from United States taking the silver medal and Abraham Kibiwot from Kenya taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of two rounds, each with races of up to twelve athletes. In the first round, the top three with the fastest time advance to the next round, together with the six fastest non-qualifiers. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.
Preview[]
Thirty-six athletes qualified for the event historically dominated by Kenyan athletes. At the previous Games, Soufiane El Bakkali edged out the Kenyans at the last stride to win the event for the first time in four decades. He also added two more golds at the world championships in 2022 and 2023, making him a clear favorite for the title. His major challenger was the world number one and defending silver medalist Lamecha Girma, who set a new world record time at the 2023 Diamond League meet in Paris.
