The women's shot put of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 12 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium . With 36 athletes competing, the event was won by Michelle Carter from United States , with Valerie Adams from New Zealand taking the silver medal and Anita Marton from Hungary taking bronze.
Format [ ]
The competition exists out of two separate rounds. In the qualification, each competitor gets three attempts to push a "shot" of over 4 kilograms as far as possible. After three attempts, the twelve best performance advance to the final, including athletes tied for twelfth place. In the final, the qualified athletes once again get three attempts to reach as far as possible, but contrary to the qualification, the eight best-placed athletes get another three attempts. The athlete with the farthest shot wins the event.
Preview [ ]
Thirty-six athletes qualified for the event with defending Olympic champion Valerie Adams as the one to beat, having won the Olympic title in 2008 and 2012, and as the world champion of 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2013. Gong Lijiao won the silver medal in 2012 and was once again one of the big challengers for the athlete from New Zealand, just like reigning world champion Christina Schwanitz , world indoor champion Michelle Carter , and European indoor champion Anita Marton . Other potential medal contenders and outsiders also included Raven Saunders , Gao Yang , and Felisha Johnson .
