The women's discus throw of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 15-16 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium. With 34 athletes competing, the event was won by Sandra Perkovic from Croatia, with Melina Robert-Michon from France taking the silver medal and Denia Caballero from Cuba taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of two separate rounds. In the qualification, each competitor gets three attempts to throw a discus as far as possible. After three attempts, the twelve best performance advance to the final, including athletes tied for twelfth place. In the final, the qualified athletes once again get three attempts to reach as far as possible, but contrary to the qualification, the eight best-placed athletes get another three attempts. The athlete with the farthest throw wins the event.

Preview[]

Thirty-four athletes qualified for the event with plenty of big names in the field. Sandra Perkovic was the defending Olympic champion and 2013 world champion, but missed out on the most recent world title after Denia Caballero won the gold medal in Beijing in 2015, ahead of Nadine Muller and Yaime Perez. 2009 world champion Dani Samuels also qualified for the Olympic competition, with other medal contenders also including Asian champion Su Xinyue, 2013 world silver medalist Melina Robert-Michon, and Julia Harting.
