The women's 5000 metre of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 16-19 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium. With 34 athletes competing, the event was won by Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot from Kenya, with Hellen Onsando Obiri from Kenya taking the silver medal and Almaz Ayana from Ethiopia taking bronze.

Thirty-four athletes qualified for the event with Olympic champion of the 10,000 metres and the second-fastest woman in the world Almaz Ayana as one of the big favorites to get her second Olympic gold medal. However, the other Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes were also very strong, with Hellen Onsando Obiri, Mercy Cherono, and two-time world champion of the 10,000 metres Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot as some of the big medal contenders.
