The women's 400 metre hurdles of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 15-18 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium. With 48 athletes competing, the event was won by Dalilah Muhammad from USA, with Sara Slott Petersen from Denmark taking the silver medal and Ashley Spencer from USA taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In each round, the top two with the fastest time advance to the next round, together with a number of fastest non-qualifiers. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Forty-eight athletes qualified for the event with defending bronze medalist Zuzana Hejnova as the reigning world champion. Dalilah Muhammad had recorded the two fastest times of the year, ahead of Janieve Russell and Ashley Spencer. Sara Slott Petersen finished just outside the medals at the most recent world championships, though Eilidh Doyle had finished fourth in 2013. Other potential medal contenders and outsiders also included Wenda Nel, Sydney McLaughlin, Ristananna Tracey, Leah Nugent, and Anna Ryzhykova.
