The women's 400 metre of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 13-15 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium. With 57 athletes competing, the event was won by Shaunae Miller from Bahamas, with Allyson Felix from United States taking the silver medal and Shericka Jackson from Jamaica taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to eight athletes. In each round, the top two with the fastest time advance to the next round, together with a number of fastest non-qualifiers. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Fifty-seven athletes qualified for the event with American athletes having run seven of the ten fastest times of the year. Three-time Olympic champion Allyson Felix, Olympic gold medalist Natasha Hastings, and world championships finalist Phyllis Francis were selected for the American team, but none of them had come to the world-leading time of Shaunae Miller. The Jamaican team was also very strong with Christine Day, Shericka Jackson, and Shephenie Ann McPherson, with the field also featuring two-time European champion Libania Grenot, world indoor champion Oluwakemi Adekoya, and world youth champion Salwa Eid Naser.
