The women's 3000 metre steeplechase of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 13-15 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium. With 52 athletes competing, the event was won by Ruth Jebet from Bahrain, with Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi from Kenya taking the silver medal and Emma Coburn from United States taking bronze.

Format

The competition exists out of two rounds, each with races of up to fifteen athletes. In the first round, the top three with the fastest time advance to the next round, together with the six fastest non-qualifiers. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Fifty-two athletes qualified for the event with Ruth Jebet and Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi as the big favorites, having set the five fastest times of the year, just ahead of Emma Coburn, Etenesh Diro, and Beatrice Chepkoech.
