The women's 1500 metre of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 12-16 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium. With 42 athletes competing, the event was won by Faith Chepngetich Kipyegon from Kenya, with Genzebe Dibaba from Ethiopia taking the silver medal and Jennifer Simpson from United States taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to fifteen athletes. In each round, the top five with the fastest time advance to the next round, together with a number of fastest non-qualifiers. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.
Preview[]
Forty-two athletes qualified for the event with world champion and world record holder Genzebe Dibaba and world lead Faith Chepngetich Kipyegon as the big favorites for the title. Some other big names were the world indoor champion Sifan Hassan, the best non-African runner at the recent world championships Laura Muir, the indoor silver medalist Dawit Sayaum, and the European champion Angelika Cichocka. With the Ethiopian, Kenyan, and American runners as other favorites, some outsiders included former world champion Jennifer Simpson, and former world medalist Shannon Rowbury.
