The women's 100 metre of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 12-13 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium. With 80 athletes competing, the event was won by Elaine Thompson from Jamaica, with Tori Bowie from United States taking the silver medal and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce from Jamaica taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of four rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In each round, the top two with the fastest time advance to the next round, together with a number of fastest non-qualifiers. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.
Preview[]
Eighty athletes qualified for the event with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce as the defending Olympic champion and reigning world champion, with her countrywomen Elaine Thompson as another big favorite for the title. The big competition as the winners of the silver and bronze medals at the world championships were Dafne Schippers and Tori Bowie, but other big names also included Michelle-Lee Ahye, Blessing Okagbare, Marie-Josee Ta Lou, and English Gardner.
