The men's shot put of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 18 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium. With 34 athletes competing, the event was won by Ryan Crouser from United States, with Joe Kovacs from United States taking the silver medal and Tomas Walsh from New Zealand taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of two separate rounds. In the qualification, each competitor gets three attempts to push a "shot" of over 7 kilograms as far as possible. After three attempts, the twelve best performance advance to the final, including athletes tied for twelfth place. In the final, the qualified athletes once again get three attempts to reach as far as possible, but contrary to the qualification, the eight best-placed athletes get another three attempts. The athlete with the farthest shot wins the event.

Preview[]

Thirty-four athletes qualified for the event with the Americans Joe Kovacs, world champion and world-leading results, Ryan Crouser, former world youth champion, and Darrell Hill as the big favorites. With two-time world champion David Storl, defending Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski, world indoor champion Tomas Walsh, and two-time world junior champion Konrad Bukowiecki also competing, the field was quite close. Other medal contenders would be Stephen Mozia, Michal Haratyk, Damien Birkinhead, and Andrei Gag.
