The men's javelin throw of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 17-20 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium. With 37 athletes competing, the event was won by Thomas Rohler from Germany, with Julius Yego from Kenya taking the silver medal and Keshorn Walcott from Trinidad and Tobago taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of two separate rounds. In the qualification, each competitor gets three attempts to throw a javelin as far as possible. After three attempts, the twelve best performance advance to the final, including athletes tied for twelfth place. In the final, the qualified athletes once again get three attempts to reach as far as possible, but contrary to the qualification, the eight best-placed athletes get another three attempts. The athlete with the farthest throw wins the event.

Preview[]

Thirty-seven athletes qualified for the event with the German athletes Thomas Rohler, Johannes Vetter, and Julian Weber as the big names in the competition. However, the German team failed to win a medal at the last world championships, when Julius Yego took gold, in front of Ihab Abdelrahman and Tero Pitkamaki. Antti Ruuskanen and Jakub Vadlejch were the only two other competitors to have reached a distance of 87 metres in 2016, with Zigismunds Sirmais, defending Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott, and Vitezslav Vesely also contending for a medal.
