The men's 800 metre of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 12-15 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium. With 58 athletes competing, the event was won by David Lekuta Rudisha from Kenya, with Taoufik Makhloufi from Algeria taking the silver medal and Clayton Murphy from USA taking bronze.

Format

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In each round, the top two with the fastest time advance to the next round, together with a number of fastest non-qualifiers. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview

Fifty-eight athletes qualified for the event with reigning world champion David Lekuta Rudisha as the favorite for the title. The athletes who had come closest to his time in the year were Alfred Kipketer and Pierre-Ambroise Bosse, who came as close as half a second. Taoufik Makhloufi had won the gold medal in the 1500 metres in London and would also once again be a medal contender in this event. The other medalists of the last world championships Adam Kszczot and Amel Tuka were among the main outsiders, just like Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich, Brandon McBride, and Ayanleh Souleyman.
