The men's 400 metre hurdles of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 15-18 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium. With 47 athletes competing, the event was won by Kerron Clement from USA, with Boniface Mucheru Tumuti from Kenya taking the silver medal and Yasmani Copello from Turkey taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to nine athletes. In each round, the top two with the fastest time advance to the next round, together with a number of fastest non-qualifiers. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.
Preview[]
Forty-seven athletes qualified for the event with Kerron Clement and world champion Nicholas Kiplagat Bett as the favorites for the title. Both athletes were spearheading the delegations of the United States and Kenya, respectively. Byron Robinson and Michael Tinsley were the other American athletes who were set against Boniface Mucheru Tumuti and Haron Koech. Yasmani Copello had run to the third-fastest time of the year, just in front of Javier Culson. Outsiders included Patryk Dobek, Jeffery Gibson, Annsert Whyte, and Jaheel Hyde.
