The men's 3000 metre steeplechase of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 15-17 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium. With 45 athletes competing, the event was won by Conseslus Kipruto from Kenya, with Evan Jager from USA taking the silver medal and Mahiedine Mekhissi from France taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of two rounds, each with races of up to fifteen athletes. In the first round, the top three with the fastest time advance to the next round, together with the six fastest non-qualifiers. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Forty-five athletes qualified for the event with Conseslus Kipruto as the absolute top favorite. Kenya had mostly dominated this event, having won Olympic gold in every edition since Los Angeles 1984, and with eight of the ten fastest times of the year, and eight of the ten fastest times ever, this time seemed to be no different. Kipruto was supported by the two previous Olympic champions Ezekiel Kemboi and Brimin Kiprop Kipruto. John Kibet Koech was one of the few athletes who could break the dominance of Kenya, with Evan Jager having approached the world championships podium by less than three seconds. Other medal contenders and outsiders included Soufiane Elbakkali, defending silver medalist Mahiedine Mekhissi, Hillary Bor, and Yeemane Haileselassie.
