The men's 20 kilometre race walk of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 12 August 2016 in the Pontal. With 74 athletes competing, the event was won by Wang Zhen from China, with Cai Zelin from China taking the silver medal and Dane Bird-Smith from Australia taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of a single race, in which all competitors conduct a course of 20 kilometres of race walking. The competitor with the fastest time is the winner of the event.
Preview[]
Seventy-four athletes qualified for the event with a very strong Chinese team after winning two medals in London. Chen Ding was the defending Olympic champion, Wang Zhen the defending bronze medalist, and Cai Zelin as the third member of the Chinese team. Miguel Angel Lopez was the reigning world champion after beating Wang and Benjamin Thorne for the gold medal, after having won a silver medal at the world championships in 2013, but the fastest time of the year was held by Eiki Takahashi. Other possible medal contenders included Tom Bosworth, Quentin Rew, Inaki Gomez, home favorite Caio Bonfim, Dane Bird-Smith, and Rhydian Cowley.
