The men's 1500 metre of Athletics 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 16-20 August 2016 in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium. With 43 athletes competing, the event was won by Matthew Centrowitz from United States, with Taoufik Makhloufi from Algeria taking the silver medal and Nicholas Willis from New Zealand taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to fifteen athletes. In each round, the top five with the fastest time advance to the next round, together with a number of fastest non-qualifiers. The fastest competitor in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Forty-three athletes qualified for the event with Asbel Kiprop as world champion and world-leading athlete. Kenya had two other very strong athletes, with Ronald Kwemoi and Elijah Motonei Manangoi having reached very fast times in the year, as well. Behind the three Kenyans, the defending silver medalist Taoufik Makhloufi and the bronze medalist of the world championships Abdelaati Iguider were also in contention for a medal, just like Ayanleh Souleiman, Nick Willis, Matthew Centrowitz, and Ryan Gregson.
