The men's marathon of Athletics 2012 during the 2012 Summer Olympics was held on 12 August 2012 in the The Mall. With 155 athletes competing, the event was won by Stephen Kiprotich from Uganda, with Abel Kirui from Kenya taking the silver medal and Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich from Kenya taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of a single race, in which all competitors conduct a course of 42195 metres. The competitor with the fastest time is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

One hundred five athletes qualified for the event with five of the ten fastest athletes all-time in the field, all of which coming from Kenya or Ethiopia. The two nations were well-represented by Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich, two-time world champion Abel Kirui, Emmanuel Kipchirchi Mutai, Getu Feleke, Ayele Abshero, and Dino Sefir. Other big medal contenders included the Olympic champion of 2004 Mebrahtom Keflezighi, Stephen Kiprotich, the European champion Viktor Rothlin, and Commonwealth champion Samson Ramadhani. Some potential outsiders also included two-time winner of the marathon of New York Marilson dos Santos, silver medalist of the Commonwealth Games Michael Shelley, Japanese champion Arata Fujiwara, and Abdihakem Abdirahman.
