Athletics at the 1988 Summer Olympics was held from 23 September to 2 October 1988 at the Seoul Olympic Stadium.

For the first time in history, the women's long-distance running was extended to 10,000 metres. This edition marked the last Olympics to feature the track and field athletes from the Soviet Union and East Germany.
