Athletics at the 1984 Summer Olympics was held from 3 to 12 August 1984 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
For the first time in history, women competed in three more events added to the program: 3,000 metres, 400 metres hurdles, and the marathon. The women's pentathlon was also replaced with the heptathlon, a combination of seven track and field events.
