Ashley Callus is a swimmer who has competed for Australia. He competed at the 2000, 2004, and 2008 Summer Olympic Games.
When Sydney hosted the Games in 2000, the Australian men's team of Michael Klim and Chris Fydler handed Callus a half-body length lead over the U.S. team's Jason Lezak on the third leg of the 4x100 metres freestyle relay. When Ian Thorpe passed the fast-pacing Gary Hall at the last leg to hit the wall first, Callus and the rest of his teammates celebrated their gold medal victory with a new world record time in 3:13.67.
Four years later in Athens, Callus swam the sprint freestyle double (50 and 100), but he missed the semifinals of each. He was also dropped from the final of the 4x100 metres freestyle relay, where the Australian men's team placed sixth. After faring poorly in his races, he admitted that he had contracted the Epstein-Barr virus and took a season off to recover.
At his third Olympics in 2008, Callus rebounded from an illness to snare a bronze as a member of the Australian men's 4x100 metres freestyle relay team. He almost claimed his first individual medal with a fourth place time (21.62) in the 50 metres freestyle, losing it to Alain Bernard by 0.13 of a second.
