Artistic Gymnastics is the biggest and oldest discipline of the Gymnastics program. It is the only discipline of gymnastics to have been present at the 1896 Summer Olympics. Women were allowed to compete during the 1928 Summer Olympics, making it one of the first sports where women were allowed to compete. This is the only gymnastics discipline where there are more male events than female events.
The Soviet Union have won the most medals in Artistic Gymnastics, being only one of two countries to have won more than a hundred medals. The number two in that list, the United States have won half as many gold medals and about seventy fewer medals in total.
