The competition exists out of two separate rounds. The ranking round of the individual rounds decides which teams will play each other in the knock-out rounds, with all 16 teams qualifying. All four archers (two per team) shoot three arrows, and the team with the highest score after six arrows each gets two points, with both teams getting one point in case of a draw. The first team with five points wins and advances to the next round. In case the score is tied after four sets, all archers will shoot one arrow, with the team with the most points winning.

The course of the competition would all depend on the ranking rounds. Twenty-seven nations were represented by athletes in both the men and the women's competition, and could therefore qualify for the knockout phase of the mixed team competition. However, South Korea had to be one of the big favorites to win the gold medal, after an impeccable Olympic history in both individual disciplines.
