Preview[]
Eighty-eight athletes qualified for the event with Petra Vlhova and Mikaela Shiffrin as the big favorites for the title. The two had finished first and second in every World Cup event of 2021/2022 they had both competed in so far, with Katharina Liensberger and Wendy Holdener clinching second place in absence of Shiffrin. Lena Duerr finished on the podium in three out of seven races, but still trailed the two by a marginal difference. Other medal contenders and potential outsiders also included Ana Bucik, Michelle Gisin, Anna Swenn Larsson, and Sara Hector, who had also won the giant slalom event only a few days prior.
Gwyneth ten Raa was the youngest competitor in the field at the age of 16 and was over a year younger than Gabija Sinkunaite, Aruwin Salehhuddin, and Zrinka Ljutic, who were all from 2004, leading the twenty-seven athletes born in the 21st century. Nastasia Noens and Maria Shkanova were the two competitors from before 1 January 1990 and were two of the five athletes who would make their fourth Olympic appearance, with the other three being Erin Mielzynski, Nino Tsiklauri, and Federica Brignone. Even competitors competed at the Olympic Games for the third time, with fifty-five athletes in the field making their Olympic debuts in Beijing. Despite absence of the 2018 Olympic champion Frida Hansdotter, the silver medalist Wendy Holdener and the bronze medalist Katharina Gallhuber made their presence in Beijing.
