Preview[]
Eighty-nine athletes qualified for the event with Marco Odermatt as the top favorite for the medals. The Swiss alpine skier had won four out of five races in the World Cup and had almost double as many World Cup points as Manuel Feller and defending silver medalist Henrik Kristoffersen, who was the only other athlete to have won an event. Alexis Pinturault, Luca de Aliprandini, and Alexander Schmid had also finished in the top 3 of any of the World Cup races throughout the season and would also hope to contend for the medals. Other potential outsiders also included Justin Murisier, Mathieu Faivre, Zan Kranjec, River Radamus, and Lucas Braathen.
Yung Hau Tsuen Adrian was the youngest competitor in the field at the age of 17, and was a bit over four months younger than William Flaherty, and eight months younger than Mathieu Neumuller, with all three making their Olympic debuts. Denni Xhepa, Richardson Viano, and Matteo Gatti were the remaining athletes in the field to have been born in the 21st century, but on the other hand, the oldest competitor in the field Carlos Maeder also made his Olympic debut at the age of 43. He was five years older than Benjamin Alexander, who was also due to make his Olympic debut in Beijing. With so many old and young debutants, Jung Dong-hyun and Krystof Kryzl, had the most Olympic experience, making their fourth appearance in 2022. The Olympic champion of 2018 Marcel Hirscher did not compete after announcing his retirement, but the remaining defending medalists Henrik Kristoffersen and Alexis Pinturault were present in the competition.
