The women's giant slalom of Alpine Skiing 2018 during the 2018 Winter Olympics was held on 15 February 2018 in the Yongpyong Alpine Centre. With 81 athletes competing, the event was won by Mikaela Shiffrin from USA, with Ragnhild Mowinckel from Norway taking the silver medal and Federica Brignone from Italy taking bronze.

The competition exists out of two races. The competitor with the fastest combined time without missing one of the gates is the winner.
Preview[]
Eighty-one athletes qualified for the event. Viktoria Rebensburg was a former Olympic champion, winning a gold medal at Vancouver 2010, while winning bronze four years later. Main challengers included Tessa Worley, who was the reigning world champion, and Mikaela Shiffrin, who won the gold medal at the slalom four years prior. Federica Brignone was the number four on the World Cup ranking, almost 150 points behind Shiffrin, while Ragnhild Mowinckel could also compete for a medal. Other outsiders included Stephanie Brunner and Manuela Moelgg. The event was supposed to be held on the 12th of February but was postponed due to weather conditions.

Run 1[]
Manuela Moelgg was the first athlete to go, and she set a time that wouldn't be broken in the first run, while the second skier on the startlist, Tessa Worley, disappointed with the fourteenth time of the run. Federica Brignone was able to finish within 0.3 seconds of Moelgg, keeping a good position for a medal, with Mikaela Shiffrin being the only one able to finish between Moelgg and Brignone. Ragnhild Mowinckel had a good first run, finishing only 0.5 seconds after Moelgg, 0.02 seconds in front of the third Italian in the top 5 Marta Bassino. The Swedish skiers Sara Hector and Frida Hansdotter completed the top 7, with Viktoria Rebensburg right behind them.
Run 2[]
The fastest time of the second run was for Estelle Alphand, who was able to climb from 26th to 16th in the final standings. Tessa Worley compensated for a bit of her lost time, getting the second time of the run, and climbing to seventh, with Viktoria Rebensburg climbing to fourth place in the final rankings. Mikaela Shiffrin ensured herself of the gold medal, getting the fourth time in the second run, with Ragnhild Mowinckel getting the silver medal, and Federica Brignone getting the bronze medal. Manuela Moelgg, who got the fastest time of the first run, lost almost two seconds, finishing eighth in the combined ranking. Marta Bassino (5th) and Frida Hansdotter (6th) completed the top 8.

The first women's event of the alpine skiing was won by Mikaela Shiffrin, who won her second Olympic gold medal, after winning gold at the women's slalom four years prior. Ragnhild Mowinckel and Federica Brignone won their first Olympic medal, at their second and third Olympic appearance, respectively. Viktoria Rebensburg missed her chance to win her third consecutive medal in giant slalom, with Marta Bassino finishing fifth at her Olympic debut.
