The men's slalom of Alpine Skiing 2018 during the 2018 Winter Olympics was held on 22 February 2018 in the Yongpyong Alpine Centre. With 108 athletes competing, the event was won by Andre Myhrer from Sweden, with Ramon Zenhaeusern from Switzerland taking the silver medal and Michael Matt from Austria taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of two races. The competitor with the fastest combined time without missing one of the gates is the winner.
Preview[]
One-hundred-and-eight athletes qualified for the event, with Marcel Hirscher as one of the favorites, after winning the Giant Slalom and the alpine combined, with Henrik Kristoffersen as one of his main rivals. Behind Kristoffersen, there were several medal contenders, including Italians Mandred Moelgg and Stefano Gross, Michael Matt, whose brother Mario was the reigning Olympic champion, and Andre Myhrer.
Summary[]
Run 1[]
The biggest surprise of the first run was top favorite Marcel Hirscher making a mistake, having to retire from the race. The biggest medal contender left was Henrik Kristoffersen, who managed to establish his position as the new favorite with the fastest time of the first run. Andre Myhrer was the only one who was able to stay within 0.5 seconds from Kristoffersen, with Victor Muffat-Jeandet racing to the third time of the run, after winning bronze at the alpine combined. Manfred Moelgg and Sebastian Foss-Solevaag completed the top 5. Alexis Pinturault, who won the bronze medal at the giant slalom raced to the sixth fastest time.
Run 2[]
Despite having the fastest time of the first run, Henrik Kristoffersen wasn't able to retain his advantage, making a mistake in the second run, and having to retire from the race, just like Marcel Hirscher had done in the first run. This left the competition open, Andre Myhrer having a clear advantage of almost 0.5 seconds over Victor Muffat-Jeandet.
Michael Matt, who had a relatively slower first run, compensated for his lost time, racing to the fastest run of the second run, only 0.1 seconds in front of Ramon Zenhaeusern, managing to clinch the bronze medal, while the latter won silver. Frenchman Loic Maillard also stayed within 0.05 seconds, climbing from 19th place to 14th place in the final rankings. Croatian Elias Kolega surprised with the fourth-fastest time of the second run, with Alexander Khoroshilov getting the fifth time. Andre Myhrer managed to stay ahead of the competition, winning the gold medal, with Zenhaeusern and Matt winning silver and bronze. Frenchmen Clement Noel, Alexis Pinturault and Victor Muffat-Jeandet completed the top 6, with Kristoffer Jakobsen the only other athlete within a second of Myhrer.
Results[]
The last individual event in men's alpine skiing was won by Andre Myhrer, who won his second Olympic medal, after winning the bronze medal at this event eight years prior. The other medalists Ramon Zenhaeusern and Michael Matt won their first medals at the Olympic Games, in the case of the latter one at his Olympic debut. The French skiers Clement Noel, Alexis Pinturault, and Victor Muffat-Jeandet missed out on Olympic medals on less than a tenth of a second.
