Alex Baumann has competed for Canada Alex Baumann has won 2 gold medals at the Olympic Games

Alex Baumann is a swimmer who has competed for Canada. He competed at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games.

Baumann was widely regarded as one of the top Canadian swimmers of all-time. He was selected to carry the Canadian flag at the Los Angeles 1984 opening ceremony. In the 400 metres individual medley, he seized a comfortable lead on the rear of his breaststroke swim over Ricardo Prado and continued through the freestyle leg to win his country's first swimming gold in 72 years with a new world record. Five days later and swimming in lane four of the 200 metres individual medley final, Baumann started his race roughly on the initial length until he improved his pace on the backstroke and breaststroke legs. Coming closely behind at the 150-metre turn, he produced a late surge to overcome Pablo Morales through the freestyle leg and hit the wall first. Baumann's gold-medal time of 2:01.42 lowered his own world record by more than 0.8 seconds, making him the first swimmer to crack the 2:02 barrier. With two gold medals and two new world records, Baumann became the second male swimmer to strike the medley double (200 and 400) at the Olympic Games, following Gunnar Larsson.

He is the father of Rio de Janeiro 2016 breaststroke swimmer Ashton Baumann.
