Alejandro Abascal has competed for Spain Alejandro Abascal has won 1 gold medal at the Olympic Games

Alejandro Abascal is a sailboat racer who has competed for Spain. He competed at the 1976, 1980, and 1984 Summer Olympic Games. At the 1980 Olympic Games, he and his crew member Miguel Noguer won the country's first gold medal since Amsterdam 1928.

He first competed at the Olympic Games in 1976, when he competed with Jose Benavides in the Flying Dutchman sailing competition on Montreal. After finishing 11th in the first race, 4 seconds behind the British winners, they were able to win the second of seven races. After having to retire from the third race and receiving the maximum amount of points, they also won the fourth race. Being on a provisional third place after four of seven races, there was a realistic chance to win an Olympic medal, though after finishing 11th and 18th in the next two races, a fourth place in the last race wasn't enough to compensate, and they finished seventh in the competition.

Four years later, he returned to the Olympic stage in the Flying Dutchman class, but this time with Noguer. The first race was promising, finishing fourth but only 0.25 seconds behind the Hungarian winners. After finishing first and second in the next two races, it was clear that this Spanish team was going for gold, even though their dominance was broken with a fourth place in the fourth race. After winning the next two races, they were almost ensured the gold medal in the event. The only possible scenario in which they would lose the gold medal would be if the Irish pursuers David Wilkins and James Wilkinson would finish first in the last race, and if Abascal and Noguer were not able to finish the race. They did not participate in the last race, but with the Irish team finishing second, they became the first Spanish Olympic champions since the equestrian jumping team won gold in 1928.

Another four years later, Abascal and Noguer attempted to defend their Olympic title, but the wind was less favorable. The finished sixth in the first race, but that would ultimately be their best result: even though they finished ninth in the second and sixth races, and eleventh in the fourth race, they also finished two races around fifteenth place, with only one result being negated. With a seventh place in the last race, they finished the competition just outside of the top 10, and were not able to defend their title. He was selected to carry the Spanish flag during the opening ceremony.
